Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Ignite Joy Co’s FAQ page! We hope that we can answer some of your most asked questions here:
How do I care for my candle?
Caring for your candle IS important!
Trim the wick to ¼” before lighting every time This makes all the difference in the longevity and clean burning of your candle. A long wick burns much too hot and will both use up the candle more quickly and create soot. A wick trimmer is a helpful tool but nail clippers can work too.
Burn your candle for up to 3-4 hours at a time. It’s very important that the first time you use the candle to burn it long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container. This prevents the wax from building up and possibly tunneling during future use.
Never leave a candle burning unattended or within reach of a draft, pets, or small children.
If the flame seems high or the container is too hot in the midst of burning, simply extinguish the flame, let it cool down, trim the wick and restart!
How long do candles burn for?
Depending on the type of container wax and wick - each candle has a different burn time. For reference, our basic candle burns 40-50 hours.
What kind of wax do we use in our candles?
We’ve researched a lot of waxes and at this time, we’ve found a coconut soy blend to be our favorite for candles. When making our wax melts we use a soy wax.
There is a lot of ‘talk’ out there about what a clean candle is. I love this article that gives some insight into the different waxes that are used in candle making. Keep in mind that all waxes go through a refining process to make them safe for consumers.
Wondering what a cold and hot throw are? A cold throw is how a candle smells before it’s lit. A hot throw is the scent of a lit candle. There is a lot of science into producing a candle that has a good cold + hot throw.
What type of wick is in my candle?
Our favorite wicks are wood wicks which can sometimes crackle a bit for that extra bit of ambiance and we also love using cotton wicks in our smaller candles. Our wicks are zinc and lead free.
What's in a fragrance?
While we source fragrances from various vendors, we always use phthalate free fragrances. Sometimes a fragrance might smell great in the bottle and not so much in a candle, hence the testing phase. Also, some might smell not so great in a bottle and create an amazing candle.
