The Science Behind Candle Making

The Science Behind Candle Making

Candles are an interesting thing. I've been asked questions like, "can you make me a candle in a certain fragrance?" and "if I buy vessels, can you create a fragrance for me?" My answer has to be no. Why? Because so much work goes into creating every single candle that I sell. It's not just a hobby that I am working on, it's a brand + business.

Candles are a combination of wax (paraffin, soy, coconut, apricot or beeswax) wicks (wood or cotton), vessels (cement or glass) and fragrance (so many choices). There are various types of all of these things as well as a whole lot of vendors who are selling the components to candle making. These are just the pieces needed to create a physical candle. On top of this there are things like packaging and avenues of selling (online or in-person) as well as the branding.

Every candle also requires an extensive testing process before it's made in batches and sold to the public. This means that they various combination are tested for cold throw (how a candle smells unlit) and hot throw (the smell when lit). Often times, a fragrance might smell good in the bottle but not as good when made into a candle. Making candles also requires adding fragrance and pouring at various temperatures. I'm telling you, it's literally a science experiment.

Any business involves many moving pieces and it's hard to know all that is involved unless you are doing the work or you are privy to seeing the work that others might be doing as they create a business.

Awhile back, I met someone who makes craft cocktails. As I listened to how involved making a cocktail is, I had a realization that the price I pay for that fancy drink at a bar is because someone has spent the time and energy to craft something magical for the consumer to enjoy. It was a definite lightbulb moment for me.

Creatives are makers. Makers are learners. Makers are also serious about their creations and take great pride in making products that we want to share with you, our customers.

As a small business owner, I'd like to say I appreciate you for understanding the love I pour into each of my products. Candle making is not only a creative craft, but a science project. Thanks for following along on my journey.
